Public Health Nurse

Salary range:

$38.39 - $47.25 per hour  (ONA Health)

This is a temporary full-time position working 35 hours per week up to one (1) year from date of hire.


Preferred Background:

The successful candidate will possess a degree in Nursing or certificate in Public Health Nursing from a recognized university. Current registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario and a recent certificate in Breastfeeding Management are required. The ideal candidate will be self-directed, have strong collaboration skills and recent experience with the Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) program inclusive of Nursing Child Assessment Satellite Training (NCAST) certification and electronic documentation within the HBHC database. Excellent communication skills are required, both written and verbal with proven ability to develop therapeutic client relationships with parents and families at risk of/or experiencing challenges.  Experience in health promotion strategies, adult education, project management, case management and service coordination are preferred. French or additional language skills are considered an asset.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screen. This position may require weekend and evening work to support the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program.  Extensive daily travel may be required between locations within Halton Region. Incumbent must supply own transportation. 



Using standards of promoting health, building individual/community capacity, building relationships, facilitating access and equity, and professional responsibility and accountability, the nursing duties will include the following:

·         Responsible for health assessments, health promotion, and health education.

·         Provides case management, service coordination, counseling and referrals for families at risk of/or experiencing challenges

·         Provides breastfeeding support and promotion

·         Responsible for keeping accurate health records and statistical information.

·         Maintains an excellent level of knowledge of Public Health Program Standards, HBHC protocols, resources available to clients and departmental and program policies and procedures.

·         Functions as a member of the Healthy Babies Healthy Children team; collaborates with other divisions within the Health Department and the Children’s Services division of the Social and Community Services Department  and the community to implement and deliver health promotion programs

·         Assists in strategy and program development within the HBHC Program

·         Provides Health Department representation on community based coalitions and groups as required

·         Performs other duties, as assigned.
